It’s a delightful area of sprawling countryside, orchards and an abundance of estates and castles, one of which is Duurstede Castle, one of the most charming medieval castles in the Netherlands.
Access to the castle, by drawbridge across the moat, takes you back to the Middle Ages.
When you walk into Duurstede Castle on its own island surrounded by a beautiful park, fairytales come to life. You enter the castle by a drawbridge across the moat. The castle’s history dates back to the 13th century, with the construction of the residential tower. The rest of the building followed in the 15th and 16th centuries. During the summer, the castle is open to visitors so you can also have a look inside before relaxing on the terrace with a drink or lunch.
