Karel, Harrie, Bea, Gozer and Jaapie. These are the names of the Kaapse Brouwers (Brewers). In the Fenix Food Factory on Katendrecht (de Kaap), they have a ‘brew pub’ where you can pop in to taste these old-style beers with a local flavour.
There are several ways of getting to know Rotterdam’s beer in the ‘brew pub’ on de Kaap. You might simply have a beer at the bar, order a tasting tray or join the connoisseurs in the tasting room. The great thing about a tasting is that you can learn about how the different beers are brewed. As all that beer on an empty stomach is never a good idea, you could opt for the Beer and Cheese Tasting session in association with Booij cheese makers.

In the Middle Ages, Rotterdam had no fewer than 48 breweries. After the war only two remained: Heineken and Oranjeboom. When they left the city in the 1970s, beer brewing ceased there for a while. It was in 1996 that Stadsbrouwerij Pelgrim revived the industry.
